Good read. "Humanising healthcare" by Dr Margaret Hannah. Great ideas briefly and clearly explained. The book outlines an approach in Fife to reduce winter pressures on beds by encouraging patients, staff, and community to seek better health care.
The ideas are based on Alaska's Southcentral Foundations's Nuka system of care. This is where a population of 65,000 have redesigned their healthcare system. admittedly they are small, politically well defined, and with an easily isolated budget. However, they have managed to improve outcomes, maintain costs, improve staff morale, and reduce demand - quite an achievement.
The book gives of examples of where such practice exists (mainly in the NHS) and identifies them as 'patterns of hope' - perhaps the early manifestation of a future, better system.
