Just read Sapiens by Yuval Harari. Sparkling account and interesting perspective of the history of humankind. Full of stories. Learnt about Montezuma, learnt a lot about the agricultural revolution, the affluence of hunter-gatherers, and a lot about our disregard for other animals. Basically we haven't achieved a great deal with our domination of the planet other than largely spoiling it. We haven't even become much happier but there has been improvement in the last 50 years - relatively peaceful and great progress in reducing poverty.
The book ends with the challenging question of what do we want to be now that we seem to be on the verge of breaking free from our evolutionary limits. Apes that become poorly disciplined and wasteful gods with no sense of purpose are dangerous indeed.
