In this book Tony Atkinson - Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science - asks the question, "If we wish to reduce the extent of inequality, how can this be done?"
His answer includes looking at history for evidence of what has worked in the past and what could be used now. He arrives at 15 recommendations including advice on directing the human impact of technologies, the balance of power among stakeholders in the economy, progressive taxation on income, property and wealth, capital transfers to children and young adults, an emphasis on social insurance, and increased overseas development assistance by rich countries.
It is a technical and well-argued positive account by an economist recognised as a leading authority on inequality research. He stresses the importance of addressing the "inequality turn" in recent decades especially in the UK to improve society and the economy. His bold ideas might work but will need a lot of political will to deliver them.
"More than just a program for change, Atkinson’s book is a voice of hope and informed optimism about the possibilities for political action."
