Online learning is supported by factors such as Accessibility, Functionality, Group discussion, Students' communicationality, and Technology aptitude. It is negatively influenced by time consumption and distraction.

Researchers analysed learners on a large online course using thematic analysis and then mapped the findings on to a causal loop diagram. This is helpful for designers of online learning and identifies areas in particular that reinforce participation in a course.
